Tennis star clears up Carlos Alcaraz rumours after being spotted together in Miami | Tennis | Sport

Carlos Alcaraz is back in Miami for the second Masters 1000 tournament of the season. As the No. 1 seed, the Spanish star has received a bye directly into the second round, and he’s made the most of having some extra days off ahead of the tournament. Alcaraz headed to the Kaseya Cente, sitting courtside to watch the Miami Heat face the LA Lakers.

The world No. 1 enjoyed a catchup with Luka Doncic, but he was also filmed having a catch-up with a group of women, including inactive tennis star Caroline Wozniacki. The video started doing the rounds, but the 2018 Australian Open champ has quickly put any speculation to bed.

Taking to X (formerly known as Twitter), Wozniacki shared one of the videos of herself and her friends chatting to Alcaraz after the basketball game, and wrote: “lol, that’s me and my (married) friends. not juicy I’m afraid lol.”

Alcaraz might have enjoyed a night off, but he’s had to get straight back to business as he faces a huge test in his opening match at the Hard Rock Stadium. The 22-year-old will face teenage sensation Joao Fonseca in their highly-anticipated first official match, and they’ve been given prime Stadium Court billing on Friday night.

Ahead of their first meeting on tour, Alcaraz said of Fonseca: “I think he has the level. He has the shots, he has the level, he has the power. I would say, he has everything. A lot of things to improve, obviously, but if he does the right things, he’s going to there for sure. When or if he does it, he’s going to be a player to beat.”

Coming into the Miami Open, the 2022 champion explained: “I think I am just trying to take it as a compliment, players try to play their best, more aggressively if they want to beat me. I think it’s a great thing to know and obviously I am just really happy that they are taking us [as] players to try to beat, and we are trying to make them improve as a player as well. So for me, that’s great. But sometimes when I step on the court and see the opponent playing that level, it’s not that funny.”

“I’m going to face Carlos in the same way. Trying to face him as a top-five guy, playing good tennis and trying to respect him. But I can’t respect him on the court,” Fonseca told ATP Media.

“I need to face him with the mentality that I can win. I think that’s the mentality and trying to be brave, enjoy the time, enjoy the learning and enjoy the process on court. But of course, I want to win.”
