A beautiful European has been named the “best” for a cruise ship holiday. Barcelona in Spain has been crowned the best in Europe for a cruise

A new study by Avanti Travel Insurance has revealed the top-ranking cruise destinations for as cruises are seen to be growing in popularity.

While Tampa in Florida has topped the global charts, Barcelona has earned the top spot among the European destinations.

Situated on the northeastern coast of Spain, Barcelona serves as a gateway to the Mediterranean Sea. Its central location makes it an ideal starting point or port of call for cruises exploring the Mediterranean region, including destinations like the French Riviera, Italy, Greece, and the Balearic Islands.

The destination is renowned for its rich cultural heritage, stunning architecture, and vibrant arts scene.

Visitors can explore iconic landmarks such as the Sagrada Familia, Park Güell, and the Gothic Quarter, which showcase the city’s unique blend of Gothic, Modernist, and contemporary architecture.

A paradise for food lovers, the city offers a diverse culinary scene that ranges from traditional Catalan cuisine to innovative Michelin-starred restaurants.

Travellers can sample fresh seafood, tapas, paella, and other delicious Spanish specialties at the city’s numerous bars, cafes, and restaurants.

Sara Young, Revenue Manager at Carnival Cruises UK said: “The demographic for cruises is definitely changing as we are seeing more disrupters entering the market such as the Ritz Carlton who’ve launched their first cruise ships, with more coming in 2024.

“We are also seeing more cruises aimed at the younger generations, with Virgin offering hen-dos and Disney cruises growing in popularity for families.

“There are also more cruise ships now going to more unusual places. It used to be that the ships would follow set routes such as the Mediterranean and Caribbean itineraries, but now some of the cruise lines have smaller ships that take them to more interesting places such as islands in Scandinavia and routes up to Iceland.”

“Barcelona continues to be one of the most popular cruise destinations as they have the largest cruise port in Europe and 4th in the world.

“The reason the port is so busy is because of its position at the mouth to the Mediterranean, so ships coming to and from the Mediterranean have to pass by it. Barcelona is full of attractions suitable for everyone including sightseeing, incredible restaurants and nightlife.”
