The Greek island just as beautiful as Rhodes and Crete but with hardly any tourists | Europe | Travel

Thinking about a holiday to the Greek islands? We don’t blame you. If it’s sun, sea, fabulous cuisine, and stunning views you’re after, Greece’s numerous islands are just the ticket.

However, the beauty of the Greek islands isn’t exactly a well-kept secret.

Any jaunt to Rhodes, Crete, or Mykonos – three of the best-known Greek islands – will inevitably involve negotiating hoards of tourists looking to go to the same restaurants, bars, and sun spots.

So if you’re after a holiday to the Greek islands without the hassle brought on by other holidaymakers, look no further than Lefkada.

Lefkada is easier to get to than other Greek islands. Rather than hopping on a flight or a ferry, you can actually drive there, as this Ionian island is connected by road to the mainland and is close to Prevaza airport.

Once you’re in Lefkada, explore the island’s beautiful forests – which provide welcome shade in the summer months – and bask on its glorious beaches.

Unlike many of its neighbours, Lefkada’s beaches – despite being some of the prettiest – are often without tourists. So you won’t have to fight for a patch of sand on which to lay your beach towel.

Perhaps the best of the beaches on Lefkada is Milos. A white sandy stretch that does draw a few tourists, but is positively empty compared to the ones you find on Crete and elsewhere.

One Brit visitor wrote of the beach: “By far the best beach on Lefkada. A little bit of effort is required to get here. Take the turning from the main village street and then it’s about a 20-minute walk up and over the hill.

“We went early around 8am so not many people on the pathway but it gets busier later on as we found on our return. There is a boat from the village but it didn’t run on the day of our visit.

“It’s a beautiful beach, shingle with clear water. The waves aren’t as rough as some of the other nearby beaches such as Avali Beach.”
