The island destination just 3 hours from the UK loved by Royals | Europe | Travel

The Greek islands are certainly popular holiday destinations, with thousands of people flocking onto cruises for some island hopping every year. And this year among those jetting off to these beautiful Mediterranean islands were the Prince and Princess of Wales, along with their children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

During their time away, the royals are said to have stayed on a £40 million superyacht and sailed to several islands. However, the family spent the majority of their time on Kefalonia, the largest of the Ionian islands. Following the news of the royal’s Greek getaway, Iglu Cruise have reported that Google searches for Kefalonia increased by 65%.

Commenting on this, Iglu’s travel experts have said: “Kefalonia is a fantastic holiday destination, often regarded as a hidden gem of Greece.

“During the summer, you’ll find fewer crowds compared to popular islands such as Santorini, Crete, Rhodes or Corfu, making it perfect for those looking to unwind and relax.”

And it’s not just the Royals who have been known to holiday on Kefalonia, with A-list celebrities, such as Tom Hanks, Madonna, and Demi Moore all having been spotted in Fiskardo, a stunning village located on the northern tip of the island.

The travel experts note that celebs are likely drawn to Kefalonia’s shores for its blend of natural beauty, luxurious amenities, and privacy compared to the more mainstream Greek islands.

Alongside this, the island is also renowned for its luxury hotels, making it ideal for those looking for a particularly luxe stay while island-hopping, or simply remaining on Kefalonia.

Kefalonia is home to Myrtos Beach, which was recently named the sixth-best beach in Greece, according to Tripadvisor 2025. This stunning beach offers dramatic natural beauty, stunning turquoise waters, and white pebbles.

Another beautiful beach on the island is Fteri Beach, which is surrounded by white cliffs and untouched beauty, perfect for anyone wanting to relax away from the crowds that gather at the more popular beaches.

For those looking for some adventure, head to Melissani Cave, a cave and cenote located northwest of Sami, on the island’s eastern coast, famous for its breathtaking beauty

The cave also has a rich history, steeped in Greek mythology, associated with the nymph Melissanthi and the god Pan, adding to its charm.
