The pretty little market town overshadowed by famous neighbour just 10 miles away | Travel News | Travel

This market town is a must visit for tourists travelling to the Yorkshire Dales National Park – despite it being overlooked by a more famous town just 10 miles away. Wetherby in West Yorkshire has an idyllic spot along the River Wharf offering an array of beautiful walks and scenic views across the Yorkshire Dales.

Famous for its busy weekly market selling local produce, its location puts in right in between the famous cities of Edinburgh and London, making it a great staging post for travellers.

As well as the weekly market, the town puts on a monthly farmers market that sees hundreds of people flock to venture round the stalls selling an array of food, wine and hand-crafted pieces.

The historic town is centred in the Yorkshire triangle of Leeds, York and Harrogate. In 1240, the town was given a Royal Charter giving it the right to hold a market.

The town itself has crafted a historical trail that leads visitors around the town centre and gives a fascinating insight into Wetherby’s history.

Leaflets on the trail are available in shops, with historic buildings marked by blue plaques along the way. Visitors will find plenty of pretty riverside walks and picnic areas, as well as a free car park by the riverside Bandstand.

The town centre is full of small, independent shops selling a wide variety of goods. For those looking to grab a bite to eat, there’s plenty of cafes, pubs and restaurants to choose from.

Wetherby is just 12 miles from the busy city of Leeds, making it a great place to stay for those hoping to explore the surrounding areas and still get a taste of the city.

Meanwhile, Harrogate that is nearby sees plenty of tourists thanks to its reputation as a fashionable, up market town with some of the highest property prices in England.

York is also nearby, offering an abundance of activities and historical walks through the city centre.

For those looking to stay in Wetherby, there are plenty of accommodation options, from self-catering cottages to hotels and B&Bs.

There are also a number of spas in the area, making a great spot for those hoping to escape to the countryside and enjoy a spa stay while still getting to explore some of the beautiful spots the Yorkshire Dales has to offer.
