The stunning coastal village named Spain’s ‘most beautiful’ and a must-see for 2025 | Travel News | Travel

The north of Spain is filled with charming towns and coastal retreats – but few wish to explore beyond its most famous regions.

While the northwestern autonomous community saw record tourist numbers in 2023 of over seven million, its fellow northern region, the Basque Country, which shares a border with France, welcomed just two million.

What this does mean, however, is that you can be sure that any town you decide to visit in the Basque Country, will not leave you packed-in like sardines among crowds of tourists which have become notorious in Spain.

The epitome of tranquil escape by the Atlantic, the stunning village of Mundaka stands out as a coastal gem.

Mundaka has recently been celebrated by National Geographic for its surfing appeal, picturesque streets and postcard-perfect landscapes and has been listed as one of the magazine’s must-visit destinations for 2025, reports The Olive Press.

Heralded for its famous left-hand wave during the winter months, surf enthusiasts flock to the village to have a chance to surf what has been described as Europe’s best.

In fact, Mundaka is so famed for its surfing, it has even hosted the world championship and has very reliable conditions, with every one out of three days being surfable.

Yet there is far more to Mundaka than just surfing – the village’s old town must be seen to be believed, as it could easily be mistaken for falling right out of a fairytale.

The old town’s streets are filled with colourful facades and balconies adorned with flowers, linking up many of the village’s highlights. Most of the houses in Mundaka are medieval, designed as fishermens’ houses that face towards the sea.

The stunning harbour is filled with countless small colourful boats, highlighting the significance of the village’s maritime culture.

Another unmissable stop is the Church of Santa Maria, a 16th century Gothic church which sits right where the land meets the ocean.

Nearby, the Renaissance-style Cross of Calvary and the neoclassical Simitur House – dating back to 1783 and adorned with striking murals – mean you can easily fill several days just exploring at a relaxed pace.

Another must-see is the 19th century Hermitage of Santa Catalina chapel, which sits perched on a peninsula. Surrounded by dramatic cliffs, the sweeping ocean views will take your breath away.

For those wishing to extend their stay beyond a day-trip, there are several hotels and Airbnbs available, giving you a chance to fully immerse yourself in life in Mundaka.

“If you are traveling in the Basque Country (and you should), you should make a few stops in between the big cities and Mundaka is one of them, even if you don’t surf,” wrote one visitor on Tripadvisor.

They added: “The views are so nice and the people are extremely friendly, the beach is gorgeous and it is definitely worth spending a day there. If you do surf, maybe even a few.”
