The stunning medieval village with the cheapest houses on popular Canary Island | Travel News | Travel

Stepping into this stunning 15th-century Spanish village, you would not believe you are just 12 miles from the capital of Gran Canaria, one of the country’s most popular tourist islands.

Boasting cobbled streets and beautiful carved wooden balconies, the village of Teror offers an insight into traditional daily life on the Canary Island, which has been essentially lost as it becomes the ultimate holiday destination.

As an added bonus, Teror also has the lowest property prices per square metre in the region, meaning it has become an increasingly appealing option for those seeking a peaceful yet scenic place to escape to.

Located in the province of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the municipality has a population of 12,799 residents, with an average price of £968 per square metre.

In fact, Teror is so stunning it has actually been named one of the most beautiful of not just the entire Atlantic archipelago, but the whole of Spain.

Located in the centre of Gran Canaria, Teror is absolutely steeped in history, exemplified by the Basilica of Our Lady of the Pine (Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Pino) – a breathtakingly beautiful church which is dedicated to the patron saint of Gran Canaria.

Its traditional houses, many of which date back centuries, feature exquisite wooden balconies, with their walls painted every colour under the sun, adding to the village’s vibrant and dazzling atmosphere.

A symbol of Teror’s identity, these balconies are often adorned during celebrations and religious processions.

Among other must-see landmarks in the village are the Gothic-inspired Yellow Tower, an emblem of the town and the 18th-century Old Episcopal Palace, which has been lovingly restored to preserve its splendour.

Calle Real, the main street of the historic centre, is lined with some of the most traditional shops on the island – something you won’t find in the crowded streets of Puerto de Mogán.

According to Idealista, four-bed properties that have received recent renovations with updated and modern appliances can be bought for £454,430. For those tempted with a DIY project, other five-bed properties are available for just £107,410.

Those lucky enough to visit Teror have shared their visits on Tripadvisor, with one writing: “This is worth visiting in Gran Canaria, lovely picturesque village, old colourful Spanish houses. Plenty of shops, restaurant and cafe, it’s a shame we missed Sunday Market.”

“Wow, just wow. What a find. A beautiful village in the mountains with a amazing vibe, amazing restaurants and lovely people,” wrote another. “It looks like you just walked out onto a film set.”
