The UK town that everyone always mistakes for being a city is just 25 minutes from London | Travel News | Travel

This UK town is one of the largest but Brits are usually shocked to find out it’s not a city.

Reading has not been granted city status despite making numerous applications over the years.

It has most of what cities are known for: a big shopping centre in The Oracle, plenty of places to eat, a metropolitan lifestyle and large diverse population.

In order to be granted city status, it must obtain a Royal Charter – which it currently does not have.

The town is known for being so close to London, it takes just 25 minutes on the train making Reading a popular place for commuters to live.

Reading is also known for its huge music festival which takes place each year in the town – it has been ranked as one of the UK’s best festivals.

Not only this but it has a popular university, a thriving shopping centre and an exciting food scene.

Its university was the first in the UK to employ a female professor – in 1908 Edith Morley was appointed for in the English department.

She held the position until 1940 and was awarded an MBE for her services to the university.

The River Thames also flows through the town offering the opportunity for riverside walks.

One popular place to visit in the area is Beale Wildlife Park which is a great place to immerse into nature.

A visitor on Tripadvisor said: “I love seeing the animals at Beale Park and finding out about their behaviour and lives.

“The green winged macaws are so beautiful and the tayra is interesting to watch. The gorgeous lynx and the owls are cute. It was perfect for a rainy day and a great cup of tea.”

Another popular place to visit in Reading is to visit its Abbey Ruins which look even more striking amongst the modern day buildings which surround them.

One visitor on Tripadvisor said: “A free attraction to visit – the ruins are well signposted with information boards. The walking trails are well maintained and afford views over the ruins and the river.”

The town also has an impressive museum which has been called a “hidden gem” by one visitor.

The guest said: “Incredible museum that taught us all many interesting things; the roman history was fascinating. A big thanks to staff for keeping us entertained!”
