The UK’s friendliest city is a historic gem | Travel News | Travel

Moving to a new city can be an exciting prospect but it can also take a while for new residents to feel at home.

But where will new residents be most welcomed?

According to research from Remitly, Cambridge is the UK’s most welcoming city with the highest community spirit.

The team analysed the number of Meetup groups in cities around the UK to find the answer. Meetup is a website where people can join groups to enjoy hobbies or meet other people.

Cambridge had 148 Meetup groups, beating Brighton and Manchester to the top spot as the UK’s most welcoming city.

Home to one of the world’s top universities, Cambridge is a historic city where tourists can enjoy a punt along the river.

A walkable city, it’s easy to get around Cambridge on foot and many of the city’s top attractions are part of the university campus.

Brighton was the UK’s second most welcoming destination and the seaside city is very popular with LGBTQ+ tourists.

Jago McKenzie, Business Management Director at Remitly commented: “Alongside finding the right place to work and live, establishing a community of friends who share similar interests is one of the most important aspects of moving to a new city.

“A strong sense of community can increase your sense of belonging and purpose, and prevent any feelings of isolation and loneliness that can be common when moving somewhere new.”
