The world’s most expensive airport that sells pints for £15 | Europe | Travel

Istanbul Airport, located in Turkey’s capital, has earned the nickname of the “most expensive airport in the world”. A writer from Italian news website L’Economia, Leonard Berberi, recently visited the airport and witnessed the unbelievable prices firsthand.

Having paid a mere €1.50 (£1.28) for a bottle of the country’s most popular beer, Efes, in the city’s Taksim Square just a day previously, Leonard was now being faced with the hefty price tag of €17.50 (£15).

It wasn’t just the eye-watering prices of the alcoholic beverages that caught his eye. The food on offer within the airport was also similarly priced, with a Big Mac meal costing €21.50 (£18).

Burger King’s prices weren’t at all an improvement, with the famous Whopper costing €22 (£19). He also stumbled across savoury croissants with a starting price of €14.50 (£12.50).

Many Reddit users who are part of the airport’s 80 million annual visitors took to the travel community on the site to complain about the airport’s prices, with one even claiming to have spent €6 (£5) for a banana.

The airport’s staggering prices isn’t the only negative reason as to why the airport has fallen into the spotlight lately, with it being recently listed as one of the airports where your luggage is most likely to go missing. AirAdvisor stated that there are 3,340 searches for lost luggage every year within the airport.

The airport itself opened in 2018, with the capacity to accommodate 200 million yearly passengers. It serves up to 122 countries and also acts as the hub for Turkish Airlines.
