A beach in Florida, America, has the highest rate of shark attacks with over 300 incident reports made. It is the site of the most shark bites anywhere in the United States, making it one of the most dangerous seaside locations on planet Earth.

Despite the large number of attacks, many have only resulted in minor injuries. New Smyrna Beach’s waters are home to many kinds of sharks, most commonly blacktip sharks, spinner sharks, and bull sharks. The shark activity is most common from April to October.

American Surf Magazine says: “New Smyrna Beach stretches along Florida’s eastern coast, and is known for its fun sized waves, compact sugar sand that you can drive on, as well as its daunting nickname – the Shark Bite Capital of the World.”

The beach has 17 miles of white sandy beaches and some of the best surfing in Florida, it’s a prime destination for watersports and laid-back seaside vacation.

Its location 20 minutes south of Daytona Beach on Florida’s central Atlantic coast also makes it a popular choice for racing fans, who can catch the excitement up close at the New Smyrna Speedway.

Despite the beach’s grim reputation as one of the worst beaches in the world for shark attacks, it doesn’t seem to have put people off.

One regulara visitor said on TripAdvisor: “I’ve lived in Florida almost 40 years and this is still my favorite beach for so many reasons. 

“Even though the last few years it’s gotten more crowded particularly on the weekends. There are so many amazing places to eat and little shops to explore. 

“The wildlife is cool to see. There are parts of the beach you can drive on and a part you can’t which is nice when you have little kids with you. 

“Lots of condos to rent to stay longer than the day which we like to do when we aren’t boating at Disappearing Island.”

To stay safe from shark attacks if visiting the area, it’s been recommended that visitors follow some safety tips.

Make sure to always swim in groups as sharks are more likely to go after humans when they’re alone.

You should also avoid swimming during dawn or dusk, this is when sharks are most active and you’re not able to see them coming very well.

It also says you should steer clear of fishing areas as fisherman’s bait can attract sharks.

For clothing, avoid anything bright as anything vibrant can catch a shark’s attention easier.

Finally it says you should be mindful of your surroundings, signs such as schools of fish or diving birds can be a signal that a shark is close by.
