While Porto is home to the Super Bock Brewery, the city plays host to an annual beer festival in June.

For beer lovers, the festival has earned itself seventh place on DFDS’s list of must-visit spots.

But Porto has more to offer than cheap beer if you’re after some history and culture then this is the place to go.

What to do in Porto?

Porto is the second largest city in Portugal just behind Lisbon.

It is pretty easy to get about too by foot or by bike and you can head across the Douro River to Vila Nova de Gaia where you can tour the cellars and try the wine which has given Porto UNESCO World Heritage Site status.

The city has plenty of vineyards- to visit throughout the Douro Valley offering brilliant tastings and tours.

Elsewhere if food is more you’re thing then you’ll want to head to Mercado do Bolhão market to taste the region’s delicacies.

This includes seafood, Francesinha sandwiches (which are made from an assortment of hot meats) and Pastéis de Nata (which is the Portuguese version of an egg custard tart).

You can also relax and chill at Matosinhos Beach which is just 20 minutes from the city centre.

What’s the weather like in Porto?

Ok, anywhere is pretty much better than the UK now, right?

Well, the weather in Porto is much more reliable. July is the warmest month with an average temperature between 20°C and 24°C.

Even better, you’ll get around 10 hours of sunshine a day too perfect for soaking up some summer sun.

But if you’re thinking of a winter getaway then January is the coldest month. You can expect temperatures of 6°C and highs of 14°C.

Getting to Porto Thankfully there are several airports which go to the city. You can get direct flights to Porto departing from UK airports like Edinburgh, Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds, Manchester, London Heathrow, and London Gatwick.

The flight is only two-and-a-half hours so perfect if you’re looking for a short weekend getaway.

Return fares start from £33 in April (at the time of writing) with it being the cheapest month to fly to Porto.

Fares vary throughout the year months like August and September often surpass £100 with peak fares.
