Three England Lionesses nominated in Ballon d’Or awards | Football | Sport
England heroes Hannah Hampton and Michelle Agyemang, and manager Sarina Wiegman, have been nominated for honours in the 2025 Ballon d’Or awards. The ceremony will take place on September 22 in Paris, with FIFA currently revealing the names in contention.
Chelsea keeper Hampton, 24, proved one of the stars as then Lionesses triumphed in Switzerland. Her performances have seen her nominated for the Yachine Trophy for the best female keeper alongside four other players. She’ll be rivalled by Nigeria No.1 Chiamaka Nnadozie, Dutch stopper Daphne van Domselaar, Germany’s Ann-Katrin Berger and Barcelona and Spain star Cata Coll.
Agyemang, 19, cemented herself in national folklore in Switzerland with late equalisers against both Sweden and Italy in the knockout stages. She’ll be up for the Yashin Award in France, handed to the world’s best player under the age of 21.
The Brighton forward will be up against Spain’s Vicky Lopez, Paraguay’s Claudia Martinez Ovando, and Linda Caicedo from Colombia. Netherlands star Wieke Kaptein completes the quintet.
Wiegman is in the frame for the women’s Johan Cruyff Trophy for the best manager of the year. The 55-year-old has now won three straight Euro’s titles in succession, having led her native Netherlands to glory in 2017 before sealing back-to-back triumphs with the Lionesses.
France boss Sonia Bompastor, Brazil manager Arthur Elias, and Nigeria’s Justine Madugu are also nominees. The only club manager in the frame is Renee Slegers, after leading Arsenal to Champions League glory.
Further representatives from the Lionesses are also in line for team glory in the Women’s Club of the Year category. Arsenal and Chelsea are both nominated alongside Barcelona, Lyon, and Orlando Pride.
A host of England players are also likely to be announced when nominees for the prestigious Ballon d’Or Féminin are confirmed later this afternoon. Since the award began in 2018, Lucy Bronze and Beth Mead have both finished second, but it’s never been won by a player representing the Lionesses.
