A blood-soaked action thriller, touted as a must-watch for Pulp Fiction enthusiasts, has just landed on Prime Video.

Despite its quiet arrival on the platform, it’s rapidly climbing the ranks of most-watched titles among subscribers.

At present, the film is the fourth most popular title on Prime Video, trailing only behind new releases Malice, Playdate and After the Hunt.

Freaky Tales, as per its synopsis, weaves together the lives of an NBA star, a corrupt cop, a female rap duo, teenage punks, neo-Nazis and a debt collector in 1987 Oakland, California.

The plot unfolds across four interconnected stories set against real historical events and locations from that year.

The manner in which these diverse narratives intertwine has drawn comparisons to Quentin Tarantino’s iconic Pulp Fiction. Much like that film, Freaky Tales boasts a star-studded cast, reports the Mirror.

This includes Star Wars actor Ben Mendelsohn and Pedro Pascal, known for his roles in The Last of Us and The Mandalorian. They are joined by ex-NFL player Marshawn Lynch and even Hollywood legend Tom Hanks.

The film was penned and directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. This filmmaking pair have previously worked on episodes of The Big C and Masters of the Air, as well as directing Captain Marvel for the MCU.

Numerous critics have questioned why the film’s recent streaming debut hasn’t received greater publicity. Specialist publication Film Stories even published an article criticising major streaming platforms for insufficient promotion of new releases.

The article states: “Freaky Tales is like a cross between the interlocking tales of Pulp Fiction and the retro aesthetic of another Tarantino-derived joint, Grindhouse.”

Another critic suggested the overlooked film features one of Hollywood’s leading actors delivering their finest work in years. They wrote: “This short yet unforgettable scene, which legitimately caught me by surprise, is not the most consequential of this action flick that everyone should be watching, but it does provide a key moment.”

They continued: “This is honestly one of the best Tom Hanks performances in a long time. He’s quick-witted, funny, and just so dang mysterious. The two-time Academy Award winner looks like he was having the time of his life behind the desk, and I had just as much fun watching it.”

Numerous viewers have also expressed their enthusiasm. One fan wrote on social media: “Wow. Just WOW. This movie was a blast from start to finish! Everyone brought their A-game to their roles, and let me just say, this is what CINEMA looks like. If you’re a fan of high-octane storytelling, imagine Kill Bill but on steroids, that’s Freaky Tales.

“It delivers action, gore, and yes, surprisingly, a lot of heart. The anthology format might throw you at first, but trust me it works. Each piece connects in a way that’s so clever and satisfying. You’ll want to keep your eyes glued to the screen, because everything comes full circle by the end. It’s one of those films where the more you watch, the more you catch..”

Another chimed in: “Great movie from the nostalgic 80s. If you want a different kind of movie full of excitement and craziness, watch this! It is wild! Like an old Stephen King movie with a twist!”.

A third viewer commented: “One of the best movies I’ve seen in awhile. It’s well done and entertaining. Love how the movie wraps up and each chapter and how it all comes together at the end.”
