‘Timeless’ historical epic is a must-watch this Christmas | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV

An epic historical film featuring classic Hollywood stars is airing on BBC Two today, after which it will become available to stream totally free for a limited time.

Released in 1960, this three-hour masterpiece was directed by one of the greatest filmmakers of all time and is a must-watch for film buffs this holiday season.

Whether you’ve already feasted on the sweeping visuals, jaw-dropping action sequences and breathtaking drama or have yet to tick this beloved classic off your watchlist, you cannot go wrong with Spartacus this Christmas.

Kirk Douglas stars in this ambitious historical spectacle set in Ancient Rome as a born slave who is sold to Gladiator trainer Batiatus (played by Peter Ustinov).

Forced to kill fellow slaves for entertainment, Spartacus eventually leads the prisoners in rebellion against the Roman Empire, making their way to Southern Italy to return home.

Also featuring iconic performers such as Laurence Olivier, Jean Simmons, Charles Laughton and Tony Curtis, this engrossing early masterpiece by acclaimed director Stanley Kubrick is airing this afternoon at 3pm, after which it will be available on iPlayer for a limited time.

One five-star review on Letterboxd said: “Spartacus is a masterful epic by legendary director Stanley Kubrick. It’s a genuinely compelling and visually stunning movie, capturing a message of gladiatorial rebellion and freedom that resonates throughout the ages.

“Overall, Spartacus is a great reminder of why it was such a classic film of its era. So if you’re in the mood for a timeless piece of film-making, then Spartacus is sure to be a hit. It’s thoroughly entertaining and unmissable cinema.”

And another user gave it a perfect score, saying: “An epic film that has inspired other great works such as Gladiator and Braveheart, Stanley Kubrick’s Spartacus is a cinematic experience to behold.

“There is no doubt that Spartacus is cut from the old Hollywood fabric, which makes the movie dated for modern viewers. However, that old style should not be a deterrent for viewers, especially for a film stacked with classic scenes. Additionally, Kirk Douglas puts in a career [best] performance (along with Ace in the Hole).

“Forgetting all the pros of the film for a moment, Spartacus would be worth watching for the epic “I am Spartacus” scene, which, for my money, is one of the greatest scenes in movie history.”

And a 10/10 review of IMDb raved: “A very moving and compelling story of epic proportions. The plot is relentless, propelled by a dazzling screenplay. Kubrick draws some of the greatest performances of the cast, and fills the screen with images that fascinate throughout. Well paced for a movie of this magnitude.”

If you’re still not sold, Spartacus holds a staggering 93 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes, as well as an impressive 87 percent audience rating, so there’s a strong chance you’ll be discovering a new favourite film if you tune in this afternoon.

Spartacus airs at 3pm on BBC Two and will be available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
