Tiny island close to UK paying for people to move there – spectacular | World | News

A stunning uninhabited island is looking to pay two people to run its cafe and tourist lodges. The island doesn’t have anyone living on it, but it’s popular amongst visitors due to its unspoilt natural beauty. Every year, the island seeks a duo to run its coffee shop and three tourist lodges. The Great Blasket Island is located off the coast of County Kerry in the southwest of the Republic of Ireland.

It was once home to a thriving Irish-speaking community, but people eventually ditched the island to live on the mainland. While the job sounds like heaven, the vacancy ad warns that those applying should be hardworking individuals, as this is not a “holiday job”. The tourist season can get very busy, with overnight stays as well as day trips from nearby mainland Ireland. “We are looking for hardworking, responsible and trustworthy duo that have great people skills and initiative,” the job listing states.

Successful candidates will need to have reached the island by the end of March 2026. The job is for the busy tourist season, which lasts until around the middle of October.

Describing the key responsibilities in the job, the ad reads: “The caretaker’s role is to manage the coffee shop and 3 holiday cottages on the Great Blasket Island. This involves meeting and greeting overnight guests, cleaning and painting three holiday cottages, serving tea and coffee and snacks to day visitors from the coffee shop and ensuring the everyday to day runnings are being met.”

A salary is paid but is not determined until an offer is made. Direct flights to Kerry run from Manchester and London Luton airports. From there, you will need to take a ferry across the water to Great Blasket Island.

Successful applicants who decide to take on the roles will stay in accommodation above the cafe. They can use the cafe’s kitchen as their own, and there is a private bathroom and lounge area for the staff to use.

Additionally, a food shop is delivered daily, and laundry is taken to the mainland to be washed and returned. While accommodation is free and a salary is paid, travel to and from the island is not covered.

Those 8interested should know that days off are determined by the weather. If there is windy or wet weather, then sailings to the island might stop, meaning you will have some time to switch off.

However, constant sunny weather would mean a regular stream of people to the island, making it extremely busy every day.

Great Blasket Island, known as An Blascaod Mór in Irish, has been praised for its natural beauty and remote charm. On TripAdvisor, one reviewer said: “There were a large group of seals on the beach and plenty of sheep and even donkeys nearby. The views from everywhere were spectacular.”

Another shared: “Beautiful beach, which has a seal colony of around 2000. I was lucky enough to see about 200 lying on the beach.”

A third wrote: “It is a very worthwhile trip to the Blasket Islands. We hiked around the island and took in great views. We ended the day down on the beach watching the seals play in the surf and sun themselves. In addition, we caught a bit of the tour and learned more about the islands and who lived there. Highly recommended!”
