Tottenham news: Arne Slot snubs job and explains why as Daniel Levy back to square one | Football | Sport

Arne Slot claims that he wants to continue as Feyenoord boss next season and he could soon sign a new contract with the club. The Dutchman was expected to be appointed as ‘s permanent  successor, but a surprising turn of events leaves the north London outfit’s chairman Daniel Levy in an awkward predicament as his managerial hunt drags on.

Conte was sacked by Spurs almost two months ago, and the club’s fortunes have hardly improved under interim replacements Cristian Stellini and Ryan Mason. Levy is thought to be hard at work behind the scenes conducting talks with possible long-term solutions.

Having flirted with the likes of Julian Nagelsmann and Luis Enrique, Slot emerged as the front-runner in recent weeks after guiding Feyenoord to their 16th Eredivisie title, and their first since 2016/17.

However, despite previously explaining that he wanted his next job to be in the Premier League, Slot has now turned his back on the vacancy because of his desire to keep building on his project at Feyenoord.

“I have been hearing a lot of rumors going around about other clubs’ interest in me,” explained the 44-year-old. “Although I am thankful, my wish is to stay at Feynoord and continue working on what we created last year.”

Slot reportedly held crunch talks over his future earlier this week, although he has since clarified that those talks only surrounded negotiating renewed terms with the Dutch giants. “There is not – and there has not been – transfer conversations,” he continued.

“Yesterday’s meeting was exclusively for an extension. All talks with the club have always been only in that sense. I’m looking forward to next season with Feyenoord.” Slot’s bombshell admission will come as a major blow to Levy, who is now back to square one as he looks to make headway regarding a statement appointment.

Many Spurs fans were looking forward to the exciting, front-foot brand of football that Slot – who is poised to now sign a new contract at Feyenoord – would have brought to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The north London club will be keen to get a move on so that plans can be put in place for the summer transfer window, which opens next month.

Various twists and turns over the past few weeks make the new favourite tricky to predict. Nagelsmann and Enrique are two of the most glamorous names in the mix, but their stellar reputations mean they will want certain assurances.

Celtic’s Ange Postecoglou, former Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers and axed Chelsea manager Graham Potter are also in the running, and while Ryan Mason is thought to want the job permanently, an underwhelming sequence of results under his watch are unlikely to have boosted his chances.
