UK coastal city is one of cheapest summer staycations with £108 stays | Travel News | Travel

Many Brits are looking to make the most of the summer this year by squeezing in some weekend staycations. However, having so many options to choose from just within the UK, some are narrowing down their list to the cheapest options.

Aqua, a credit card provider, has shared its findings on the best-value destinations across the UK. And it turns out that one coastal gem stands out for its rich history, picturesque views, and wallet-friendly appeal. In the spotlight for its trifecta of affordability, charm, and heritage is Portsmouth, with Aqua explaining: “From the historic charm of the Spinnaker Tower to the vibrant waterfront at Gunwharf Quays, this coastal city offers plenty to see and do without breaking the bank.”

The south coast city, renowned for its maritime roots and scenic docks, takes pride in being amongst the trio of most budget-friendly staycation spots nationwide.

As per the study’s findings, travellers can enjoy a night’s stay in Portsmouth for as little as £108, positioning it just ahead of Eastbourne with £112 accommodation, and just below Blackpool, which comes in at £82.

Yet, price isn’t the only appeal, as the quaint beauty of Portsmouth’s historical areas — notably its quaint Old Town with its cobblestone streets — is garnering increased attention from Brits up and down the nation.

One Tripadvisor user explained the area’s appeal, noting the availability of a “nice walk to do and view the old town” and praising it for being “very well maintained,” which “gives an idea of what it was like.”

That sentiment was echoed among other travellers, with one user praising it as “a lovely place for a chilled walk away from the hustle and bustle of the city. A great selection of pubs, shops and places to eat.”

For those seeking a mix of cultural activities and relaxation by the sea, Portsmouth is an ideal choice. It boasts a pedestrian-friendly layout and a variety of free or affordable attractions, besides the obvious day out at the beach.

The Millennium Promenade, linking key seafront locations, is a stunning coastal path full of family-friendly highlights such as the Historic Dockyard, the Spinnaker Tower, and the nearby Southsea Castle.

The Historic Dockyard is brimming with interactive displays and iconic ships like HMS Victory and HMS Warrior, making it a perfect all-day destination for both children and adults.

For those looking to make the most of their money, many of the on-site museums provide combined ticket options, allowing visitors to explore multiple exhibits.

A short stroll away, the Spinnaker Tower offers impressive views over Portsmouth Harbour and the Isle of Wight. For the more adventurous, there is a glass-floor skywalk. Tickets are reasonably priced, and discounts are often available for online bookings.

Southsea Castle, constructed for Henry VIII, is surrounded by beautiful grounds and has a small museum explaining the turbulent history behind it, including the accidental explosion that blew up a large part of the castle.
