UK cold weather maps show time Brits will be hit by -1C Arctic blast | Weather | News

New weather maps show bone-chilling temperatures are on the horizon in just days as an Arctic blast hits the UK, possibly plunging the mercury to below-freezing in parts of the country.

The WXCharts maps show the weekend show temperatures could plummet in the north of England by around midday next Friday (September 27), with parts of the north of England, central and northern Scotland suffering from 0C and -1C conditions.

The cold weather snap will also be felt elsewhere in the country, with maps showing much of the country could struggle to get above 5C heading into next Saturday

Freezing temperatures will not be good news for those struggling to pay energy bills in the winter months, as Labour slashed winter fuel payments for millions of pensioners at the same time energy regulator Ofgem announced a 10 percent hike in domestic bills.

Much of Britain has had to contend with wet and stormy weather in recent days and a Met Office prediction for September 27 says more of the same could be on the way.

In a long-range forecast from September 27 to October 6 the national weather agency said: “Outbreaks of rain, which could be heavy in places, across southern areas on Friday will gradually clear away to the southeast.

“Sunny spells and a few showers are expected to the north of this. Through Saturday and Sunday, a good deal of fine weather across the UK.

“Many areas will be dry with spells of sunshine, although a few showers are likely in places, particularly in parts of the north and northwest.

“Into the following week, unsettled conditions look likely to return for many parts of the UK as Atlantic frontal systems spread in from the west.

“These are expected to bring spells of rain, heavy in places, with a risk of strong winds. Temperatures are likely to be below normal throughout.”

Earlier today, the Met Office issued a rare amber weather warning for rain, covering parts of the West Country, much of the west and east midlands, and parts of Yorkshire and Humber. They are in place from 5am tomorrow until 9pm the same day.

The national forecaster said: “An area of heavy rain is expected to develop across central and southern England during the early of hours of Monday, edging north and west and then becoming slow-moving somewhere across the warning area for several hours.

“It will then weaken and move away eastwards later Monday evening and overnight. Not all counties within the warning area will be equally affected, but it seems likely that some areas will see 60-80 mm and a few places may receive 100-120mm or more. This is likely to result in travel disruption and some flooding.”

For this evening (Sunday), the Met Office has forecast heavy spells of rain across central and southern areas that will merge into larger bands of rain by dawn.

On Monday, “heavy and persistent” rain will continue across central and northeastern England leading to flooding in places. There is also a risk of thunder in the southeast.

It will be “fairly settled” on Tuesday with synner spells and possibly a few showers, although it will feel cooler. The weather will turn increasingly wet and windy from Wednesday.
