UK homes told to dial 3-digit code as power cut warning issued in 13 regions | Weather | News

UK households are being told to dial a three-digit code as power cut warnings have been issued in 13 regions.

Storm Floris is forecast to bring heavy rainfall and strong winds up to 85mph across the northern half of the country on Monday and early Tuesday. The Met Office has warned that the powerful gusts could result in power cuts and mobile phone outages, damage to buildings and transport disruption, with people being warned to expect longer journey times and cancellations. Scotland is expected to be hit by the strongest winds on Monday afternoon and evening, but many inland areas are likely to experience gusts of up to 50mph.

Wind speeds could reach up to 70mph along exposed coasts and high ground, with a chance of reaching 85mph along exposed coastlines and hills in Scotland.

An amber weather warning for wind is in place for five UK regions on Monday from 10am until 10pm, while a yellow warning for wind covers 11 regions from 6am on Monday, August 4 until 6am on Tuesday, August 5. Some areas are covered by both the amber and yellow weather warnings, with 13 regions in total in northern England, north Wales, Northern Ireland, and the whole of Scotland forecast to be hit by strong winds.

Ahead of Storm Floris’ arrival, the Met Office has shared advice on what to do in a power cut and told households to dial a three-digit number if the power goes out.

Households should contact the electricity Distribution Network Operator (DNO) by calling 105, and they will be put through to the relevant team in their area.

In its advice, the Met Office said: “If you experience a power cut you should contact the electricity Distribution Network Operator (DNO) that covers your area.

“It’s your Electricity Distribution Network Operator (DNO) who is responsible for maintaining physical electricity supplies to your home or business. DNOs own and operate the distribution network of towers and cables that bring electricity from the national transmission network to homes and businesses. They don’t sell electricity to consumers; this is done by the electricity retailers whose name appears on your bill.

“The electricity network operators have introduced 105 – to give you an easy-to-remember number to call that will put you through to the local people who can help during a power cut.

“Alternatively, you can find the details for all the electricity Distribution Network Operator companies on the Energy Networks Association postcode lookup tool. For gas emergencies dial 0800 111999.”

Households are also advised to have a supply of torches and extra batteries in case of a power cut and to keep mobile phones charged so they can be called in an emergency.

The Met Office adds: “If your power goes off unexpectedly, check to see if your neighbours still have electricity. If their power is also off don’t assume that the DNO has already been notified – always call to let them know. If your neighbours still have power but your home doesn’t, it’s likely there is a problem with the fuses or trip switches in your home.”
