UK plastics giant crashes into administration – founded in 1958 | UK | News

A UK plastics giant has plunged into administration. Cygnet Plastics Ltd. was incorporated in 2020, according to Companies House, with an operation being present at the same site since John Prior Plastics was formed back in 1958. The firm specialises in plastic injection moulders. Based in Colwyn Bay on the north Wales coastline, the company’s base has recently been renovated.

The enterprise said on its website that it started in a small unit of 5,000 square feet, which has since expanded to 22,000 square feet. The site has “recently undergone major refurbishment to the building and machines,” it added.

Cygnet has 12 moulding machines – ranging between 15 and 1,380 tonnes, and employs 20 staff.

It added: “The Cygnet team have worked within the plastics industry for over 35 years at various management levels and have extensive knowledge of the plastic injection moulding trade.

“The company was part of a small group of two plastic injection moulding companies. Our directors recognised the greater business potential of the site at Colwyn Bay and parted company with the other site in 2006.”

Later, in December 2008 Cygnet expanded its operations by taking over a toolmaking firm and moving it into its own premises.

“By securing the services of an experienced Toolmaker to support the plastic injection moulding process, Cygnet Plastics enabled customers to have the option of having all their tooling requirements done in house,” the business said.

After the tool room facility was acquired, in January 2009, when manufacturer Marlin Products went into receivership, Cygnet “stepped in”.

Cygnet added: “This ensured that both Marlin’s existing customers and also new customers continued to have the opportunity to purchase the wide selection of high-quality plastic boxes and plastic carrying cases which had previously been available to them.”

But despite these acquisitions, The London Gazette stated that administrators were appointed on April 7.

These are Steven Muncaster and Hilary Pascoe, both of Leonard Curtis, based in Manchester. The Express has approached Leonard Curtis for a comment.
