UK’s ‘best attraction’ named and hardly anyone has heard of it | UK | Travel
Britain boasts a treasure trove of destinations to explore, and those planning a staycation will find themselves spoilt for choice. Many travellers turn to TripAdvisor when researching new locations, scouring reviews to discover the finest local attractions.
New research from Iglu Cruises has analysed TripAdvisor data to pinpoint the ultimate day out across 108 counties in the UK. The cruise operator examined which attractions garnered the most five-star reviews, revealing a rather unexpected winner.
Claiming the crown with an impressive 98.1% of reviews awarding it five stars was Ascent Aviation, situated in Scotland’s west central lowlands, reports the Mirror.
For aviation enthusiasts, this could prove the perfect day, as it features a flight simulator and pilot training facility. Guests can experience piloting aircraft to more than 26,000 airports using a 220-degree wraparound display that creates the sensation of being seated in an actual cockpit.
The simulator welcomes both youngsters and grown-ups, though those under 14 must be accompanied by an adult and may need help operating certain controls.
One TripAdvisor reviewer commented: “I bought this experience for myself and a friend who loves all things aircraft and our experience could not have been better. Our pilot, Chris, was excellent and made us feel instantly comfortable and answered all our (many) questions patiently. A fascinating experience that was really good fun!”
Another visitor remarked: “Booked as a present for my son’s 12th birthday, he had an amazing time. The Pilot provided the tuition, treated him as an adult, and provided excellent instruction and patiently answered all his questions. Highly recommend for all flying enthusiasts out there.”
Scotland claims a double victory, with Glenkinchie Distillery in East Lothian securing second place on the rankings.
A remarkable 91.1% of visitors awarded the legendary distillery a perfect five-star rating, cementing its reputation for crafting the celebrated Edinburgh Malt.
Whisky enthusiasts can explore the distillery to discover the secrets behind their single malt production, before sampling the spirits in the bar and purchasing a bottle as a souvenir.
One delighted guest said: “Willie gave us the tour and did an amazing job. He told everything with passion, humor and involved everybody in the tour. It’s the best whisky experience near Edinburgh.”
Claiming third position, the Victoria Tunnel in Tyne and Wear commands an impressive 90.5% five-star rating from visitors.
This remarkable underground wagonway dates back to the 1840s and initially served to transport coal, later transforming into a vital air raid shelter during World War II.
Tourists can enjoy guided tours of the tunnel, uncovering its captivating past and experiencing what life was like for those who sought refuge within its walls.
Wales makes its debut in fourth place with the Big Pit National Coal Museum in Torfaen, boasting an impressive 89.8% of five-star reviews.
This attraction is not for the faint-hearted or those with claustrophobia; visitors can descend 300 feet underground on a guided tour led by a miner. Deep beneath the surface, you’ll encounter the original mine workings and machinery from its operational days.
For those who prefer to remain above ground, there are also surface tours available. These tours guide you around various colliery buildings, providing an opportunity to delve into the rich history of the mine.
