Britain’s best gastropubs have been revealed, with the top spot being clinched by an establishment beloved by many celebrities and praised for its “premium quality, homemade food, focusing on the best of British produce”.

The Devonshire in Soho, which takes pride in providing a cosy and inviting atmosphere and has a classic British pub style, has claimed the top spot in the 2026 rankings of the UK’s best gastropubs. The pub is located on one of the vibrant district’s narrow streets, surrounded by theatres, eateries and busy shops. On the ground floor is a traditional wooden bar where tourists and locals just out of the office gather round, with the crowds often spilling onto the pavement outside on sunny days.

Pint of Guinness

What distinguishes The Devonshire from neighbouring bars is its reputation for serving the “perfect pint of Guinness”, with staff devoted to achieving the ideal pour. Its bar snack selection provides an opportunity to sample the culinary offerings, featuring treats such as sausage on a stick, scotch eggs and chips, amongst other British classics.

On the upper floor, the dining area has a more refined feel, with handwritten menus showcasing seasonal dishes and regional produce. With a dedicated butcher and baker amongst the staff, diners can be confident that everything is freshly prepared and locally sourced.

Standout offerings include Scottish beef, which is dry-aged and prepared in-house, alongside seafood from Devon, featuring lobsters and hand-dived scallops.

The Devonshire has attracted numerous celebrity admirers in recent years. Last summer, Hollywood stars such as Margot Robbie, Jon Bon Jovi, and Ed Sheeran were seen dining there. Yungblud and Florence Pugh even delighted customers by stepping behind the bar and attempting to pour pints themselves.

Second place went to The Unruly Pig in Woodbridge, which, in contrast, nestles within the Suffolk countryside. This 16th-century establishment boasts a classic pub atmosphere with exposed timber beams and a crackling fire, whilst incorporating a modern edge through vibrant contemporary artwork on the walls.

The cuisine represents a blend of British and Italian cooking, which they’ve christened ‘Britalian’, and uses fresh produce sourced locally wherever feasible. At the bar, there’s an extensive range of craft beers alongside more than 60 varieties of wine and fizz to complement your dining experience.

The menu changes monthly, and alongside its a la carte offerings, the gastropub provides a three-course lunch menu for £35pp, featuring three options per course. It also serves a popular Sunday lunch, where diners can choose a sharing roast platter for two or selections such as iberico pork and parmesan gnocchi.

Another London establishment, The Red Lion and Sun, took third place on the list. The pub, located in leafy Highgate Village, features two beer gardens that prove exceptionally popular during the summer months. Fourth place was taken by The Woolpack Inn, found in the picturesque Cotswolds village of Slad, which serves real ales and hearty food.
