As the festive season draws near, towns and cities across the UK are beginning to sparkle with twinkling lights, giant Christmas trees, and colourful ornaments. Among them is one destination that has captured attention from travel experts for its unmistakably  fairy-tale charm.

Ranked fifth in a list of the country’s top Christmas getaways, this “magical storybook” spot still manages to shine brightly with its cosy streets, glowing lights and nostalgic winter atmosphere. Although it may not have taken the top spot, its enchanting appeal makes it a must-visit for anyone seeking a truly heartwarming Christmas escape. Discover more about this magical spot below.

According to travel specialists at TransPennine Express, York ranked a respectable fifth place out of 10 areas in the UK. Explaining their ranking, the train expert shared: “Few places do Christmas quite like York.

“The city becomes a magical storybook destination during the festive season, earning its place as one of the best places to spend Christmas in the UK. With its medieval streets lit up by fairy lights and market stalls lining historic squares, the city feels like something out of a Dickens novel.

“Begin your trip at St Helen’s Square under the towering Christmas tree, then wind through St Nicholas Fair. From carol singers to artisanal gifts, York invites visitors to slow down and soak in the magic, whether you’re planning a winter day trip or an extended seasonal getaway.”

The experts suggest visiting the St. Nicholas Fair, where visitors can wander among festive stalls filled with local crafts and seasonal treats, and St. Helen’s Square, which is home to the city’s sparkling Christmas tree and vibrant holiday atmosphere.

When do the York Christmas festivities begin?

York’s award-winning Christmas Market started on November 13 and will end on December 21, 2025. Parliament Street and St Sampson’s Square will be filled with Alpine chalets, local crafts, artisan goods and seasonal treats, reported Visit York.

With more than 80% of traders from Yorkshire, it’s the perfect chance to enjoy festive magic while supporting local businesses. Elsewhere on Saturday, November 29, York Minster’s popular Christmas Tree Festival will commence with 70 trees on display in the cathedral’s stunning Nave, Chapter House and Lady Chapel.

The festival opens on Saturday, November 29, at 10 am with a festive light switch-on during York Minster’s family-friendly Minster Mash-Up service. The event will run until January 5, and admission is free.
