Underrated European city with new £27 flights from UK | Travel News | Travel

A new flight route will take Brits to an underrated city just a couple of hours from the UK. In 2025, Jet2 announced a slew of new routes for the winter period. The most recent one to take off is its Newcastle to Chambery flight. This small city in France, set against the scenic backdrop of the Alps, is often overlooked by tourists. However, avid skiers might be familiar with its airport, as it is a base for adventure seekers wanting to hit the slopes.

Jet2 is currently selling flights from Newcastle to Chambery for as little as £27. The airline operates the route every Saturday. The new route marks the first time the airport in the northeast of England is connected to this small yet stunning city. Chambery is often overlooked by tourists, despite its gorgeous architecture and plenty for tourists to do. The flight from Newcastle to Chambery lasts around 2 hours and 15 minutes.

Chambery has a slew of things to do for all kinds of visitors. Among them is Ville Ancienne, which gives you a proper taste of the charm and history of this place.

Here, you will find a duke’s castle and a stunning Gothic arch, among other architectural features. This attraction is a hit with visitors, with one person writing about the area on TripAdvisor: “It is pleasant to discover the ancient streets of Chambery, with many old houses and back passages.”

Other attractions here include historical museums, cathedrals and castles.

Chambery proves to be a welcome discovery for those travelling in the area. Another TripAdvisor user shared: “Chambery was worth the visit. Old town really has a genuinely old atmosphere. We were surprised that there were not a lot of people around although it was early Saturday afternoon. The town seemed somehow passive and fallen asleep.”

Another said: “You can visit the city center through lots of pedestrian streets, the old buildings giving this cozy, unique atmosphere that transports you back in time. You can find local products in different shops, like fromageries and such, or even by skimming through the farmers’ market on Tuesday and Friday for a perfect souvenir gift. You can climb the stairs up to the entrance of the dukes’ castle, walking through a giant gothic arch that will make you feel like a knight in medieval times.”

A third wrote: “The visit to the old town of Cahmbery gives really interesting and cute views so enjoy the walk, enter the churches and especially the alleys and you will discover really exceptional corners.”

While in Chambery, there are a number of private and group walking tours you can do to learn all about the city. Due to its relatively small size, it is easy to get around on foot.

Chambery can also be incorporated into a more filled trip to this region of France. Nearby towns and cities to visit include Lyon and Grenoble.

The region is also known for its great food and wine, experiences that both add to the relaxed time you can enjoy here.
