Uniqlo has ‘flattering’ designer jeans for under £35

Uniqlo has become one of my go-to high street brands for elevated basics that feel premium but don’t come with a huge price tag. Most of the time, their pieces fall firmly into the great basics category: easy, versatile clothes you can mix and match, dress up or down, and reach for again and again. But every so often, they shake things up with a designer collaboration that adds something a little more unexpected to the rails. And now, my favourite partnership is back just in time for summer.

The Uniqlo x JW Anderson collaboration first launched in 2017, and the brand has just dropped a fresh new collection for the warmer months. But one of my absolute favourite pieces from the partnership has actually been around since last year — and thankfully it’s been restocked alongside the new arrivals.

I’m talking about the Uniqlo x JW Anderson Straight Jeans. They’re back for another season, and despite being some of the best jeans I’ve ever bought (and easily my most-worn pair), they won’t break the bank. In fact, they retail for a very purse-friendly £34.90.

Personally, the era of skinny jeans is firmly behind me. These days, I’m all about a straight-leg cut. What I particularly love about this pair is that they don’t veer into overly baggy territory. Instead, the cut is relaxed but still really flattering.

Uniqlo shoppers seem to agree. One reviewer described them as “versatile”, adding: “I love the colour and the comfortable fit.” Another wrote: “I love the fit and style of these jeans. They are true to size and very flattering.”

Another big win is the choice of leg lengths. As someone who’s 5ft 2in, this is an absolute non-negotiable for me. They’re available in 29-inch, 31-inch and 33-inch options. And, as with many pieces from Uniqlo, you can also take advantage of the brand’s free alteration service (though it’s worth noting that altered trousers can’t be returned).

Sizing runs from 22 inches through to 34 inches. One thing to keep in mind, though: these aren’t high-waisted. They’re designed as a mid-rise jean, sitting a little lower and closer to the hips, so it’s worth factoring that in when choosing your size.

The jeans come in three classic washes: light blue, darker blue, and deep navy (the pair I own). And if you look closely at the back pocket, you’ll spot the distinctive JWA logo that subtly marks the collaboration.

They’re made from 100% cotton denim, with a regular fit and classic pocket detailing.

Care-wise, they’re pretty low-maintenance. They can be washed at up to 40C on a gentle cycle, although they’re not suitable for dry cleaning or tumble drying. One shopper did note: “Brilliant jeans but shrank in wash.”

Personally, I haven’t had any issues washing mine. The only thing I’ve noticed is that the JWA logo on the back pocket has faded a little over time and is much less noticeable than it once was. Still, considering how affordable they are — and how often I wear them — it feels like a very small price to pay.
