‘Unspoilt’ hidden gem village surrounded by protected wildflower meadows | UK | Travel
One corner of the undulating Yorkshire Dales hills neighbouring a pristine village transforms into a spectacular burst of colour annually – and visitors can stroll directly through the flower-filled meadow down towards the River Swale.
The Muker region offers stunning rambles and ideal locations for pub meals, with one trail leading directly through the upland hay meadows via a public footpath.
The charming unspoilt village houses fewer than 300 residents but caters brilliantly for visitors. Swaledale Woollens offers exquisitely handcrafted knitwear produced from locally sourced wool, whilst The Farmers Arms serves an outstanding hearty lunch and boasts a respectable TripAdvisor rating of 4.4 stars.
The meadows encircling Muker are distinctive as they comprise some of Britain’s scarce protected grasslands under the Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and the Northern Pennine Dales Meadows Special Area of Conservation (SAC), according to Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust, reports Yorkshire Live.
The Hiking Photographer said: “The fields around Muker in the Yorkshire Dales are a special place to visit in the months of mid-May until end of June when the stunning wildflower meadows in the fields to the north of Muker are in full bloom.”
The safeguarded meadows boast an abundance of diverse flowers, including but not limited to Wood Crane’s-bill, Melancholy Thistle, Yellow Rattle, Pignut, Lady’s Mantles, Rough Hawkbit, Cat’s-ear and Sweet Vernal Grass.
In 2013, HRH The Prince of Wales designated four of Muker’s meadows as part of the Coronation Meadows initiative.
These Muker meadows have been hailed as “jewels in the crown”, locations where visitors can appreciate the spectacular explosion of colour and rich wildlife.
Notably, these parcels of land also serve as seed donors for restoring deteriorating meadows in the surrounding region.
The Hiking Photographer added: “Each field has it’s own special mix of Wildflowers and it’s one of the best places to see upland wildflower meadows from a footpath in the Yorkshire Dales. It really is an amazing sight to see.”
A paved footpath guides ramblers directly to the meadow – from which point you can extend your journey through Swaledale and meander down towards the river itself, which cascades over the copper-hued rocks.
The optimal period to experience the meadows is during June – when the wildflowers reach their full splendour.
By mid-July, subject to weather conditions, the meadows are then harvested for hay – ensuring the fields’ preservation for the following year.
