EE customers have been placed on alert after a worrying text scam has resurfaced. The new message currently doing the rounds suggests that users need to urgently claim their “EE reward points” before they run out, with a link included that takes them to an official-looking EE website. It’s a money-stealing scam, and it appears to be an issue that’s been growing this month.

A number of EE customers have just taken to forum pages to warn others about the issue, with one saying, “This morning I received a text regarding my rewards. I followed the link to what looked like a very genuine EE website. Please be careful.”

Another EE user added, “In a moment of stupidity, I opened a text message link and put in my phone number on an EE points rewards scam text. I realised immediately after and closed the website.”

The security team at Phonely have also confirmed that their “Who Called Me” scam reporting platform shows that mobile users are receiving messages from random numbers claiming to be from EE.

Phonely is advising all mobile users to treat any unexpected message about rewards, prizes, or expiring benefits with caution.

“These messages look very convincing and can easily catch people off guard,” said Bryn Thompson, Phonely’s Marketing Director.

“Criminals know how to make scam texts blend in with everyday notifications. People should never click on links in unexpected messages. if you’re unsure, contact your mobile provider directly using official contact details to check if the message is genuine.”

EE has also posted a message telling users that it is not running a points program. A sample text has also been issued showing what users need to watch out for.

If you get a message like the one below, ignore it and don’t click on any links.

“The EE points program reminds you: Since you are a high-quality user of our company, we will give you some points as a gift. The points will expire in three working days. Please click on the link below to use your points to redeem prizes in time!”

As EE explains, “This message is not from us. To stay secure: never click unknown links in text messages.

“Do not reply to this message, do not call the number from which the message was sent and never share any personal or financial information about yourself and your family.
