US Capitol rioter pictured putting feet on Nancy Pelosi’s desk jailed | US | News

A man who was pictured with his feet on Nancy Pelosi‘s desk during the January 6 riot at the US Capitol has been jailed for four-and-a-half years.

Richard Barnett, 63, was found guilty of various felony and misdemeanour charges earlier this year. He faced up to 47 years in jail but prosecutors only argued for a seven-year sentence. The longest jail term handed down to a January 6 rioter so far was 14 years.

The image of Barnett lounging in a chair behind the then-speaker of the House of Representative‘s desk became one of the most recognisable from the riot. He left a handwritten note in Pelosi’s office that read: “Hey Nancy, Bigo was here you b****.”

Barnett was identified and arrested just days later. Interviewed at the time, he claimed to have been shoved into the veteran Democrat’s office.

“I’ll probably be telling them this is what happened all the way to the DC jail,” he said.

While Barnett is most recognisable for posing behind Pelosi’s desk, prosecutors homed in on an incident that came moments later when he approached a cop with a stun gun. He demanded the officer retrieve the US flag he’d left behind in Pelosi’s office and threatened to call in the mob if he did not co-operate, the New York Daily News reported.

The incident resulted in his conviction for felony interfering with a police officer during a civil disorder.

“While you may regret having gone there that day, you have so far not shown any acceptance of responsibility,” Judge Christopher Cooper said, CBS News reported. “You’re too old for this nonsense.”
