Venus Williams’ eight-word reply as Novak Djokovic claims Serena ‘is coming back’ | Tennis | Sport

Venus Williams has had her say as speculation around her sister Serena’s potential comeback grows. The 23-time Grand Slam champion re-entered the drug testing pool last year, a requirement for any retired player who wishes to get back on tour, and has been eligible to return to competition since February 22.

“I pick that one [Wimbledon] as well as her comeback, but yeah, I don’t know. I think she might maybe play a doubles tournament or two with Venus. That would be nice to see, just from my point of view and tennis fans, for sure.”

Venus, meanwhile, is still going strong on the tour. She returned from a 16-month hiatus last summer and has been playing a relatively frequent schedule in 2026. The former world No. 1 competed in Auckland, the Australian Open, and Austin before heading to Indian Wells, where she suffered a three-set defeat to Diane Parry.

The 45-year-old has not entered the doubles draw in California, so there will be no Venus-Serena doubles just yet. And the elder Williams sister is keeping her cards close to her chest when it comes to Serena’s will-she or won’t-she return.

Asked whether the tennis world would see her and Serena play doubles this year, Venus replied: “I think you should definitely ask her that.” Although the seven-time Grand Slam champion wasn’t willing to give much away, she has already shared her hopes of seeing Serena back on the tour.

During her comeback in Washington last year, Venus said: “She can take six months off, and she clocks it clean. You can’t teach that kind of talent. She’s just so good. I keep saying to my team, the only thing that would make this better is if she was here. Like, we always did everything together, so of course I miss her. But if she comes back, I’m sure she’ll let y’all know.”

Venus might be hesitant to discuss Serena’s potential comeback, but Djokovic believes it will happen – even if she’s currently “hiding” it.” I think she’s coming back. I don’t know. I haven’t spoken to her, but I guess the sentiment is that she’s coming back,” he said.

“Where and how, singles, doubles, we don’t know, and if I’m in her position, I would hide it too. Yeah, everybody is excited, and it’s definitely something that’s very highly anticipated. So, you know, let’s see.”
