Walkable European city with amazing food and rich history | Europe | Travel

A beautiful capital city in Europe has been named as one of the most walkable, and it’s perfect for a summer or Easter holiday as there’s so much to see and do. Not only that, but it’s cheap to get to, with UK flights from as little as £19 in April.

Budapest in Hungary has come up time and time again when it comes to discussions around great holiday hotspots. And there’s a reason it’s so popular — walking around is a breeze, it’s full of rich history and great attractions, and the food is amazing too. In fact, it was named as the top city worth visiting in 2026 by the experts at Freetour.

The experts said: “If there is one city that tops every travel ranking time and time again, it’s Budapest. The Hungarian capital claimed first place across all FREETOUR.com destinations in 2025, and 2026 is shaping up to be no different.

“It has everything a curious traveler could want: the medieval Castle Hill and the ruin bars of the Jewish Quarter, fin-de-siècle thermal baths and street food at the Great Market Hall, the misty Chain Bridge at dawn and a symphony of lights over the Danube at night. Budapest is a city where every free walking tour feels like a genuine discovery.”

Budapest is often named as one of the most walkable cities in the UK. In a ranking by Guru Walk last year, it came in second, with Rome beating it to the top spot.

The pros said: ‘Known as the “Pearl of the Danube”, Budapest blends imperial architecture with a vibrant cultural scene.’

Two of the main attractions in Budapest — St Stephen’s Basilica and the Houses of Parliament — are just a 15 minute walk away from each other. But if you don’t fancy doing absolutely everything on foot, there’s a decent public transport system too, with trams, buses and metros in place.

One of Budapest’s main attractions is without a doubt the Szechenyi Thermal Baths. It’s one of the biggest complexes in Europe, fed by two thermal springs, with the indoor and outdoor pools dating all the way back to 1913. The waters contain a whole host of health-boosting minerals and temperatures range from 27°C to 38°C.

And if you’re hungry after your dip, there’s a vibrant street food scene in Budapest too. Karaván in the heart of the Party district is a must-visit if you want to try all the local delicacies, such as Lángos, which is a deep-fried flatbread topped with garlic, cheese and sour cream.

Flights to Budapest start from £19 from Gatwick in April.
