War movie Netflix fans all watching is ‘gory masterpiece’ | Films | Entertainment

A War movie that Netflix subscribers can’t stop watching has been hailed as a ‘gory modern masterpiece’.

Hacksaw Ridge is presently part of the streaming giant’s vast collection. At the time of writing, it ranks eighth in the top 10 films chart among UK subscribers.

Fortunately, even for those without a Netflix subscription, the film is also available for free on Tubi and ITVX.

The synopsis reveals that it narrates the tale of Desmond Doss, a United States Army corporal who served as a combat medic with an infantry company during World War II. However, due to his religious convictions, he declined to carry a weapon.

The film depicts his military experience and the religious conflict it caused. It particularly highlights his heroics during the Battle of Okinawa, reports the Mirror.

Hacksaw Ridge was first released in 2016 and was directed by Mel Gibson, renowned for directing and starring in Braveheart, as well as his acting roles in Lethal Weapon and Mad Max films.

Former Spider-Man actor Andrew Garfield portrayed the lead character of Desmond Doss and received an Oscar nomination for his performance. The film garnered six Academy Award nominations in total, winning two for Best Sound Mixing and Best Film Editing.

Boasting an impressive 84% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the film continues to be celebrated as one of the finest war films ever produced by critics and fans alike. Indeed, one critic hailed it as the “best war movie since Saving Private Ryan.”

One enthusiast remarked: “A gritty war film that tells an incredible true story, that by itself is an entertaining gory modern masterpiece.”
