Warning issued to Spain tourists as woman receives £1,248 fine | Travel News | Travel

Tourists visiting Tenerife have been warned after one resident received a £1,248 (€1,500) fine for an everyday activity.

The Santa Cruz local was deemed a frequent rulebreaker by police and Santa Cruz City Council for doing it on “multiple” occasions, requiring a pricey consequence.

The hefty fine was handed out to the repeat offender for something most may do without thinking twice – feeding the pigeons.

The Mayor of the city said the local laws over the protection and possession of animals, which state that feeding pigeons in a public place is a serious infraction, is essential for public health.

Santa Cruz mayor Jose Manuel Bermudez said: “For this reason, we cannot allow behaviour that affects coexistence and generates health problems in the city.”

Public service councillor Carlos Tarife also emphasised how the repeat offence required firm action.

Tarife said: “It was the result of repeatedly breaking the law, despite previous warnings. The uncontrolled feeding of animals on public roads can lead to health problems and proliferation of pests, so it is essential to act firmly.”

Generally in the UK, feeding birds in public spaces where it is not expressly forbidden is legal, but it can vary based on specific local council regulations.

In certain city centres where feeding pigeons can lead to large bird gatherings, Public Space Protection Orders could lead to a fine.

Gary Hemming of ABC Finance told the Bournemouth Echo: “Some local councils have introduced Public Space Protection Orders (PSPOs) that can include regulations against feeding birds in certain areas, particularly city centres where feeding pigeons and other birds can attract large numbers of birds, leading to health and safety concerns, property damage, and nuisance.”
