Warning to all British passport holders over travel disruption | Travel News | Travel

As winter draws to a close, millions of Britons are likely planning their summer holidays. Some may even have flights booked already, and if you’re one of them then you need to be aware of the new rules coming into force.

Whether you’re travelling to Europe or the US, new laws are being introduced that could lead to some significant delays at airports and train stations. New requirements for visas, biometric data and passport control mean that travelling overseas is becoming more complicated. However, as long as you know what is required, it should still be smooth sailing.

For people heading to Europe, the new entry/exit system could cause delays. The rollout for this began in October 2025, and by April 2026, it is expected to be in place across all Schengen areas. It requires biometric data – fingerprints and a facial scan – at the airport.

This could cause delays at borders, so it’s important to plan for these and don’t try to cut your travel time too fine.

Also expected in 2026 is the European Travel and Authorisation Scheme (ETIAS). This will require non-European Union citizens to apply for ETIAS if they plan to travel to Europe for up to 90 days.

The application will cost £17.46 but is free for under 18s and over 70s, and lasts for three years or until your passport expires. Although this is not being rolled out until the last quarter of 2026 experts are urging people to prepare and be aware that the change is coming.

If you are planning a trip to the US, you will need to use the Mobile Passport Control App. This was designed to reduce wait times at the airport and eliminate paper forms. Once landed in the US, travellers need to download the app, create a profile and answer a series of questions about themselves.

Once your submission is complete you receive a QR code to scan at passport control.

Nicole Kerr, CEO at ground transportation platform Mozio, said: “UK searches for ‘summer holiday deals’ have increased by 123% in the past three months, as Brits look to secure their travel plans ahead of peak season. While a holiday is meant to be a relaxing and stress-free experience, experts have warned that changes to the travel industry could cause delays and confusion.”
