WASPI women’s promising latest state pension update over government meeting | Personal Finance | Finance

WASPI campaigners are pushing on in their efforts to secure Government compensation and have outlined their next steps.

Although Parliament is going into summer recess from July 30, the campaigners will continue their work with meetins with MPs in their constituencies.

New pensions minister, Emma Reynolds, has also confirmed she has received the request from WASPI for a meeting, and that this will happen in due course.

WASPI chair, Angela Madden, said the party conference season is also a good opportunity to bang the drum for their cause.

She said: “We’re going to the Labour conference, we might have an opportunity to speak there or we’ll have an opportunity to have a more formal meeting in September or October.

“There are plenty of opportunities. It’s a good time to raise the issue, and with parties that support us as well.

“What we find from going to the Labour conference is we speak to the constituency Labour parties, we speak to Labour voters, we speak to all the people who support us and don’t know if they can do anything.

“We can tell them, please write to your own MP, bring it up in your constituency Labour party, put pressure on your Government for us to get this resolved.”

Ms Madden said it will be especially worthwhile this year going to the party conferences, as there is a new cohort of MPs after the General Election.

She explained: “We also speak to supportive MPs and this time, we’re hoping to speak to new MPs, who perhaps aren’t aware of the campaign other than in very high level briefings. We find it quite a good use of time.”

The Labour Party conference is in Liverpool from September 22 to September 25, while the Conservative conference is in Birmingham from September 29 to October 2.

A key block of support for the WASPI cause is the Liberal Democrats, who have consistently backed calls for compensation and who now have 72 MPs in the Commons.

Lib Dem MP Wendy Chamberlain filed an early day motion for a “proper plan” for compensation, which many Lib Dem MPs have also signed.

The Lib Dems are heading to Brighton to hold their party conference from September 14 to 17.
