Nestled within the  Yorkshire Dales lies the delightful village of Malham, a beloved spot for enthusiastic ramblers and visitors, featuring a trail that guides you to an enchanting waterfall.

The journey starts at Malham’s village centre and follows the beck before winding through an attractive woodland area.

Concealed within it is the spectacular waterfall, called Janet’s Foss, which displays a profound plunge pool beneath with an otherworldly atmosphere.

This enchanting cascade remains under the care and protection of the National Trust, it holds mysteries, as it’s considered to possess abundant fairy folklore.

It’s thought to be the dwelling of the fairy queen Janet, who, according to legend, allegedly lives within the cave positioned behind the falls.

When sunlight strikes the water, it frequently radiates a brilliant green hue, which enhances the notion of it harbouring some kind of mystical power.

Below the surface lies a dense layer of springy moss which contributes to the vivid spectacle, along with the character of the encircling woodlands.

With bird calls and wild garlic flourishing, it provides a feeling of tranquillity and serves as the perfect spot for a swim during summer. An enthusiastic rambler described their visit, stating: “The views are epic.”

They added: “We had our picnic at the top. Before continuing our walk to Janet’s Foss waterfall. The landscape is beautiful. Makes you realise just what a beautiful country we live in. Highly recommend this walk.”

One hiker wrote on TripAdvisor: “This is such a beautiful waterfall, with tales of fairies and secrets! The path up to the waterfall is fairly flat and easily accessible until you get to the forest area, where it turns into your standard mud track, with stone and roots to navigate.”

Another guest described their excursion as “breathtaking”. They said: “Brilliant well worth the walk to it! It was so lovely to see the waterfall and then go on to see the cave, beautiful and so glad we took the time and effort.”

According to the National Trust website, the walk can take approximately two hours and is of moderate difficulty, with some uneven terrain and sections featuring rocky steps.

The complete trail should guide you along a three-mile route into the Yorkshire Dales, where dogs are permitted to accompany you as you enjoy the scenery.

Nearby sits the magnificent site that is Malham Cove, a substantial 230ft cliff of white limestone that has captivated ramblers for centuries.

The history surrounding this natural wonder will astound you, as it is believed to have been created by a waterfall from glaciers over 12,000 years ago.

Though nowadays many undertake the journey to capture a photograph at the location, which has since appeared in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1, when Harry and Hermione were transported there. It was also utilised as a filming location in the 1992 adaptation of Wuthering Heights.
