Wetherspoons is opening two more pubs in Spain by 2027 | Europe | Travel
JD Wetherspoon has announced that it will open two new pubs at a Spanish airport that’s popular with Brits.
The British pub chain officially opened its first European branch at Alicante Airport on February 9 offering a variety of Spanish and British cuisine, in addition to pre-flight pints. Customers visiting this branch can enjoy classics such as a full English, bacon butty, or burger, or enjoy their final taste of Spanish food before heading home with a tortilla or garlic prawns.
Now Spoons has set its sights on Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport where the company has confirmed two new airside pubs will be located. Around 18 million Brits visit Spain each year, and Barcelona is a major destination for city and beach breaks.
The first pub will be set in the airport’s Terminal 1, with the opening planned for September. The second will open around January 2027 and be set in Terminal 2.
Both pubs will open seven days a week from 5am to 11pm, ideal for travellers with flights at antisocial hours, and food will be served at all times up to an hour before closing.
Like the Alicante branch, the menu will include Spoons favourites from the UK such as breakfast dishes, burgers, and pizzas, alongside local dishes.
The chain also confirmed that the pubs will be partly-carpeted in the classic Wetherspoons style and serve a selection of real ales alongside its other drink offerings.
The names of both pubs are still under wraps, and Wetherspoons has confirmed the branches will have a total square footage of over 5,700 square metres. Once opened, the pubs will have space for almost 600 customers.
Wetherspoon founder and chairman Tim Martin said in a statement: “We are delighted to have secured two fantastic sites at Barcelona airport. In the short time since opening our pub at Alicante airport has proven popular with travellers and we are confident we can replicate that at our two new pubs in Barcelona. We aim to open a number of pubs overseas in the coming months and years, including those at airports.”
The new Wetherspoons pubs will be operated by Ibersol Group, one of the largest franchised brand operators in Spanish and Portuguese travel. The group manages brands such as Pizza Hut, KFC, Taco Bell and Pret A Manger in dozens of Spanish airports and railway stations.
Tim Martin previously said: “We are delighted to have opened in Spain. We believe the pub will be popular with a wide range of customers travelling home from Alicante Airport, including those travelling home to the UK and those using the terminal for trips to England and beyond.”
