Wrexham owner Ryan Reynolds dealt huge setback as football club hits rock bottom | Football | Sport

A Colombian football club backed by US investors, including Wrexham co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, has concluded its maiden campaign under fresh ownership rooted to the bottom of the table. La Equidad were acquired by a celebrity-packed consortium, which also features Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria, back in January. However, whilst Reynolds and McElhenney have enjoyed remarkable success with Wrexham, matters haven’t proceeded according to plan in South America.

The team finished bottom of Categoria Primera A, the top tier in Colombia, despite a commanding 4-0 triumph over Deportivo Periera in their concluding fixture of the regular campaign last week. Before the encounter, the club published a statement on social media encouraging fans to attend in significant numbers to ‘experience together the close of a story that defined Colombian football’. The disappointing season arrives as La Equidad, who are based at Estadio Metropolitano de Techo, gear up for a comprehensive rebrand in the coming year.

Full details remain under wraps, but the club will begin next season with a fresh identity and a departure from its customary green kit as the proprietors begin implementing alterations.

Additionally, the club’s president, Nicolas Maya, has released a statement expressing regret to supporters regarding the team’s underwhelming displays.

“We know that the sporting results this season were not what we expected nor what our fans deserve,” said Maya.

“We made risky decisions, betting on young talent and building a model with projection, but not everything went as we wanted. Even so, we are convinced it was a necessary step to start building something lasting and sustainable.”

The high-profile consortium behind La Equidad’s acquisition obtained a 99 per cent stake in the side for roughly £23million in January.

The celebrity backers also feature American baseball icon Justin Verlander, supermodel Kate Upton and NFL sensation Odell Beckham Jr.

Property magnate Al Tylis leads the group alongside former Swansea City official Sam Porter.

The rebrand will witness the club dropping “Seguros” from its official name, Club Deportivo La Equidad Seguros SA.

The modification was announced earlier this year as the organisation sought to separate itself from its previous connections to an insurance company.

The alteration gained backing from the Major Division of Colombian Professional Football and has been officially registered with the Bogota Chamber of Commerce.

The purchase represents Reynolds and McElhenney’s third venture into football ownership, following their Wrexham acquisition in February 2021 and obtaining stakes in Mexican outfit Club Necaxa via the Tylis-Porter collective in April 2024.

The complete strategy for La Equidad is yet to be unveiled, but a behind-the-scenes documentary series was launched following their initial two acquisitions.

The duo have guided Wrexham to three successive promotions in recent years, elevating the club from the National League to the Championship.

Thanks to the success of the Welcome to Wrexham documentary, the Red Dragons have gained international recognition as the owners pursue their ultimate ambition of reaching the Premier League.
