Wright sends Menzies message after darts star punches table | Other | Sport

Speaking in his press conference, Wright, when asked if he had any advice for Menzies, replied with the quick four-word message: “Yeah, do it backstage.”

He also added: “Cammy is an awesome darts player. He believed in his ability and his game to win this tournament and push himself up the rankings, which everyone wants to do. I can’t explain his reaction, but you feel disappointed in yourself when you miss shots. That’s the hardest thing, when you miss shots.”

It was the second time in two years Menzies reacted with devastation after a result. While he did not strike anything, he was left in tears after losing 3-1 to Leonard Gates in the first round last year.

Menzies issued a lengthy apology for his reaction, where he also told fans he has been coming to terms with the death of his late uncle, who passed away just before the tournament. He wrote: “I am sorry that I reacted in the manner that I did.

“It’s not an excuse, but I have had a lot of things on my mind recently and I suppose it all just became too much at the end. It has not been an easy time for me with my uncle Gary passing away recently.

“I saw him four days before he died and he gave a look which told he how much he thought of me. He treated me like a son. Had I won the game against Charlie, my second match would have been on the day of Gary’s funeral and that has not been lost on me in recent days.”

PDC chief executive Matt Porter also confirmed the incident will be reported to the Darts Regulatrion Authority for a review. He said: “I spoke with Cameron and his management before he left the venue, and he knows there is support available from the PDC and the PDPA [Professional Darts Players Association].

“Any incident of this nature is reported to the Darts Regulation Authority for review, but our main priority is the player’s health and wellbeing.”
